Call for Proposals: ARI Strategic Support Awards

Call for Proposals

Overview
Constraints on available funding sources and increased competition for decreased research funding opportunities have had a tremendous impact on the productivity and viability of research careers at UCSF. This year, due to the new NIH restrictions, the AIDS Research Institute (ARI) will provide funds to support the post-doctoral fellows on T32 training grants engaged in HIV/AIDS research up to $20,000 in funding for the support of projects over one or two years.

Award Timeline
October 15, 2016 to December 1, 2016: Applications accepted
Mid-December, 2016: Announcements made
January 2017 to December 2017 or 2018 (if two years): Award period

Eligibility
Applicants for ARI Strategic Support funding must have the following:

  • A terminal degree or equivalent educational credit
  • A supporting UCSF home accounting department
  • A position as a post-doctoral fellow, currently receiving salary support from a T32 training grant
  • A research focus on HIV/AIDS

Submission Process
Submissions must include a cover letter and budget. The cover letter must provide justification for the funding request, and should outline the benefit to ARI stakeholders and UCSF as well as the potential impact for advancing the field of HIV/AIDS research. The budget may not exceed $20,000, and subcontracts are not permitted. Because this is an internal UCSF grant, no indirect costs will be accepted. Carry-forward requests or extensions are not automatic and require prior approval with request and justification submitted 90 days prior to the end of the award year. For multi-year awards, if progress is not made during any given period, the ARI director retains the right to discontinue or retract funding.

In addition to the cover letter and budget, please provide the following supporting documentation:

  • A letter of support from a current ARI Executive Committee member
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Documentation of other support, detailing complete funding currently received (timeline, amount, funder, program description). Please be sure to include details on the T32, including the grant number.
  • Timeline, amount, funder, and program description for pending and planned proposals

Selection Process
Requests will be reviewed by the ARI and evaluated on:

  • Fit with the mission of the ARI
  • Need
  • Availability of other funding opportunities
  • Availability of ARI funds

Of those requests that meet the criteria, grants will be made with the approval of the ARI Leadership Committee, and at the discretion of the ARI director.

Reporting
Awardees are required to provide brief written progress reports every six months and may be asked to give an oral presentation to the ARI Executive Committee at the conclusion of the award.

Program Contact
Please contact Amy Lockwood (amy.lockwood@ucsf.edu) with any questions.
Applications should be sent by close of business on Thursday, December 1, to Diane Madsen (diane.madsen@ucsf.edu).

FAQs

Does the amount awarded represent direct costs only or does it include indirect costs?
Awards are for direct costs only.

Is there a limit to salary support effort I can include in my request?
The request for salary support should be clearly justified and proportionate to the effort on the project. Generally speaking 10% is considered fine and acceptable. If you need to request more make sure it's very well justified. The request for salary support will be considered during proposal review.

PI salary is allowable. What about the co-PI salary - is that allowable as well?
Salary for other faculty collaborators is allowable but should be clearly justified.

Can I use funds to conduct work in other countries?
Yes. Please clearly justify use of funds in your budget.

Can I use funds to travel to a research site?
Yes. Please clearly justify use of funds in your budget.

Can I use funds to attend conferences?
Yes, if attendance at the conference directly relates to the proposed research project. Please clearly justify use of funds in your budget.

If I leave UCSF can I keep the awarded money?
No. Changes in status must be communicated to ARI director. Funding generally stays within the institution.

Can I carry forward funds?
Carry forward allowances are not automatic and require prior approval of the ARI director. Carry forward requests must be submitted 90 days prior to the end of the award year.

My T32 is ending in December 2016. Am I eligible to apply?
No. Applicants must have an active T32 for the entire duration of 2017.
