AIDS Research Institute (ARI)

a. Junior faculty questionnaire
ARI is conducting a brief survey to better understand the needs of its constituents at the Assistant Professor and Instructor level. Please take a moment by Friday, June 3, to answer a few questions and to provide comments and ideas for us to consider. 

b. Executive Committee
Congratulations to the newly elected at-large members of the ARI Executive Committee, and thanks to those who have served so well for the past two years.

c. ARI Symposium
Save the date! Planning efforts are well underway for ARI's World AIDS Day Symposium the afternoon of Thursday, December 1, 2005, to be followed by an evening concert.

2. UCSF-GIVI Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)

a. CFAR Co-Director Offers Editorial on MDR HIV Infection

Paul Volberding, MD, offers a perspective on public health issues raised by the recent, highly-publicized case of a multi-drug resistant (MDR) strain of HIV in New York City in a recent issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

 

b. Researchers Identify Mechanism Used by Resting T Cells to Avoid HIV Infection

A small form molecule of the human protein APOBEC3G (A3G) has been found to actively repel the HIV virus in resting CD4 T cells, according to a recent study in Nature magazine. 

 

c. Call for Abstracts - Reminders

Harvard CFAR Sympoisum: HIV/TB Coinfections on Thursday, June 30, 2005; abstracts requested by June 3.

NCI HIV Malignancies Conference September 26-27, 2005; deadline for abstract submissions is July 18.

 

d. CFAR Pilot Mentoring Program Seminar: Presentation Workshop

Please join Drs. Warner Greene and Mark Jacobson for a working lunch that examines effective tactics for research presentations Tuesday, May 31, 2005.

 

e. HHV8 and Kaposi Sarcoma: Recent Research on Inflammation and Infection

Please join Drs. Donald Ganem and Jeff Martin for this timely exploration of the mechanics of HHV8 in KS Tuesday, May 24, 2005, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Gladstone's Mahley Auditorium 

 

3. Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS)

a. CAPS Community Briefings

CAPS presented two community briefings to provide updates from five CAPS research projects and from its partner, the California HIV/STD Prevention Training Center. 

 

b. CAPS Innovative AIDS Pilot Grants

The deadline for applications to the CAPS Innovative AIDS Pilot Awards Program the June 10, 2005. Application forms and further information are available on the CAPS website.

5. Positive Health Program

Congratulations to Dr. Laurence Huang for the publication of an article he co-authored in AIDS:

Crothers, K, Beard, CB, Turner, JR, Groner, G, Fox, M, Morris, A, Eiser, S, and Huang, L. Severity and outcome of HIV-associated Pneumocystis pneumonia containing Pneumocystis jirovecii dihydropteroate synthase gene mutations. AIDS 2005;19:801-805.

 

6. UCSF School of Nursing

Nurse Researchers in Residence at the Bellagio Conference Center to Study AIDS Stigma

The Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Study and Conference Center hosted a team of thirteen scholars in residence to address AIDS stigma March 8-14, 2005.
