E. Michael Reyes, MD, MPH

Since 1989, Dr. Reyes has held major leadership roles with the Western AIDS Education and Training Center and the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (PAETC). His current position as principal investigator/project director has been to develop a variety of innovative HIV clinical training programs for health care providers in the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and the six United States–affiliated Pacific jurisdictions. Dr. Reyes's role has been to develop and direct 15 to 20 subcontracts with health professions schools and community-based organizations in the region. During that time, the funding for the project has grown from approximately $1.9 million annually to over $5 million annually.

In April 2002, in collaboration with the lead institute, University of Washington, Dr. Reyes began work as co-director of the International Training and Education Center on HIV (I-TECH), serving as the principal investigator for the UCSF component of the center activities. I-TECH currently is working in 12 countries and the Caribbean region.

Dr. Reyes leads I-TECH's interface with the newly funded HRSA Twinning Center with the American International Health Alliance. The Twinning Center is designed to support twinning and volunteer activities in 15 focus countries as part of the implementation of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. The overall goal of the Twinning Center is to strengthen the human and organizational capacity necessary to scale up and expand HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment, and support services within the broader context of human resource development strategies addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemics in these countries.
