UCSF AIDS Research Institute Strategic Support – Call for Proposals
Constraints on available funding sources and increased competition for decreased research funding opportunities have had a tremendous impact on the productivity and viability of research careers at UCSF. In an effort to fill this gap, the AIDS Research Institute (ARI) provides funds to support UCSF investigators engaged in HIV/AIDS research. For its 2019 funding call, the ARI will provide a total of up to $20,000 in funding for the support of projects over one or two years. Proposed projects may include, but are not limited to: Pilot research, secondary data analysis, and filling funding gaps in existing grants.
February 1—March 15, 2019
July 1, 2019—June 30, 2020 or 2021 (if two years)
Applicants for ARI Strategic Support funding must have the following:
- A terminal degree or equivalent educational credit
- A supporting UCSF home accounting department
- A research focus on HIV/AIDS
Submissions must include a cover letter, budget, and budget justification. The cover letter must provide justification for the funding request, and should outline the benefit to ARI stakeholders and UCSF, as well as the potential impact for advancing the field of HIV/AIDS research. The budget may not exceed $20,000, and subcontracts are not permitted. Because this is an internal UCSF grant, no indirect costs will be accepted. Carry-forward funding is not guaranteed and requires prior approval. For multi-year awards, if progress is not made during any given period, the ARI director retains the right to discontinue funding.
In addition to the cover letter, budget, and budget justification, please provide the following supporting documentation:
- A letter of support from an ARI Executive Committee member
- NIH biosketch for Principal Investigator
- Documentation of other support, detailing complete funding currently received (timeline, amount, funder, program description)
- Documentation of pending and planned proposals (timeline, amount, funder, and program description)
Funding decisions will be based on merit, alignment of proposal to the ARI’s mission, feasibility of completing the project in a timely manner, and availability of funds. Funding decisions will be made with the approval of the ARI Leadership Committee, and at the discretion of the ARI Director.
Awardees are required to provide brief written progress reports every six months and may be asked to give an oral presentation to the ARI Executive Committee at the conclusion of the award.
