ARI Call for Bold, New Ideas in HIV Research
The UCSF AIDS Research Institute (ARI) seeks to facilitate scientific progress and innovation in HIV research and to enhance the effectiveness of UCSF’s HIV research, care, and education initiatives. We are calling for applications from investigators who need to generate data for bold new research ideas that will lead to new and high impact avenues of investigation. We would expect that proposal would include a statement of problem they are addressing, the work they will do with this funding, and the timeline and grant submission they will propose with the data that they generate.
The award amount will be up to $220,000 total, that can be spent over a period of 1-2 years. This award cannot be transferred outside of UCSF. Progress reports will be due annually and at the end of the project period.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must have a faculty appointment at UCSF
- Assistant, Associate and Full Professors (any series) are eligible
Application Instructions:
Applications should be submitted in a single PDF file by email to [email protected] by 5pm on Friday, June 2, 2023. They should include the following components:
- A 1-page proposal describing the 1) research question, significance, specific aims, and methodology 2) research team 3) Timeline and detailed description of the next steps (i.e., grant submission timeline) after data are generated from this award

Review Criteria and Selection Process:
Complete applications which meet eligibility requirements will be reviewed by the ARI Leadership Committee and evaluated on innovation, quality of proposed scientific investigation, and prospect that the data generated will be the launching point for a new high impact research question and future funding. Funding decisions will be made with the approval of the ARI Leadership Committee, and at the discretion of the ARI Director.
Fund Use Guidelines:
Funds requested must be used to support the conduct of the proposed research project.
