ARI Excellence Award for Outstanding Research Mentorship

Overview

The UCSF AIDS Research Institute (ARI) is excited to announce the launch of the ARI Excellence Award for Outstanding Research Mentorship. This prestigious award aims to recognize an individual with a primary appointment at UCSF who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and service towards advancing the scientific development and early research careers of junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, residents, interns, and/or students working in the field of HIV/AIDS at UCSF. Candidates for the ARI Excellence Award for Outstanding Research Mentorship should be individuals who have shown remarkable commitment to their respective areas, inspiring and nurturing the minds of the next generation.

  • Research mentoring involves the guidance, support, and supervision provided by experienced researchers to junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and other early-career researchers engaged in research activities.

Award Details

The award carries a monetary prize of $5,000 for one year, intended for unrestricted use including salary, equipment, supplies, and travel to further enhance the recipient’s teaching and mentoring endeavors.

Eligibility

This award is open to faculty of any series at the late Assistant (>4 years), Associate, or Full Professor level with a primary UCSF appointment. Past awardees are not eligible.

Nomination Process

Nominations are open to anyone in the campus community, including junior faculty, fellows, interns, residents, and students who have been taught or mentored by the nominee. Nominations are submitted via a simple form and will include a paragraph detailing the rationale for the nomination as a research mentor.

Award Notification

The ARI Leadership Committee and ARI director will review all applications. Nominees and nominators will be notified of the outcome of their nomination by the mid-May 2025.

We encourage the UCSF community to nominate deserving individuals who exemplify excellence in clinical teaching or research mentorship, and who are dedicated to advancing HIV/AIDS research and education at UCSF. Let us celebrate and honor those who contribute significantly to the professional growth and development of future leaders in their respective fields.

2024 Awardees

The 2024 Awards for Outstanding Teaching and Mentorship were granted to William Hua, PhD (Clinical Teaching) and Carol Camlin, PhD, MPH (Research Mentorship).

2020 Awardees

The 2020 Liegler Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentorship has been jointly awarded to Mallory Johnson, PhD and Priscilla Hsue, MD. ARI is grateful for their continued leadership and the inspiration and guidance they offer to trainees across the university. Thank you and congratulations, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Hsue!
